Act III

Wagner has not been a favorite with the Bulgarian opera houses. Other than two visits to Bulgaria in the late 30's by the Frankfurt State Opera for performances of the Ring cycle, the only operas presented to date have been Der Fliegende Holländer (first heard in 1930), Lohengrin (1934), Das Rheingold (1943) and Tannhäuser (1931). Most productions were with the Sofia National Opera with a few at Ruse, Stara Zagora and Varna. The performance heard here in monaural is sung in Bulgarian; Popov's Holländer and Konforti's Senta provide unique records of major artists. Note that the Daland in this performance is not the Boris Christov of international fame but a bass who spent his career in Sofia.
