The bass, Stefan Elenkov, was born on 9 January 1937 in Vidin. After studies in engineering he decided on a career in singing, first as a pupil of Christo Brambarov and then in Palermo with Gina Cigna.

From 1974 he was a member of the Sofia National Opera where among his many roles he was known for his Boris and Pimen in Boris Godunov, Philip in Don Carlo, Gremin in Eugene Onegin and the title role of Mose by Rossini. International guest appearances took him to the Bolshoi Theater, the State Opera Houses of Budapest and Vienna, and the Netherlands Opera. In 1978, Stefan Elenkov sang at the Salzburg Festival and debuted in Il Trovatore at the Hamburg State Opera. In 1992 he appeared in Nabucco as Zaccaria in Tel Aviv. Appearing with the Dallas Opera in the United States in 1991 he sang the role of Konchak in a production of Prince Igor.

In addition to a successful opera career he enjoyed success as a concert singer. Stefan Elenkov died in Sofia on 5 October 1997.
