The baritone, Ivan Popov, was born 10 May 1902 in Plovdiv. While attending the University of Sofia he studied voice with M. Michailov. From 1927 though 1931 he studied in Milan. In 1932 he returned to Bulgaria where he entered the State Academy of Music and studied with Mara Marinova Tzibulka. His debut was in 1935 in the Bulgarian opera Savskata Tzaritza.
In 1938 he became a lecturer at the Academy of Music and in 1942 a singing teacher. Among his students were Kiril Krastev and Liliana Vassileva. In 1944 he was a regular guest soloist with the Sofia National Opera. In the season 1955-56 he was director of the Varna Opera.
Major roles in his career included Di Luna, Escamillio, Prince Igor, Pizzaro in Fidelio, the Dutchman, Rigoletto and Onegin.
