Ivan Konsulov, baritone

The baritone, Ivan Konsulov, was born 29 May 1946 in Varna. His vocal studies began with Ilija Jossifov in Sofia and continued in Italy with Aldo Protti. His stage debut was with the Ruse Opera in 1972. After Joining the Sofia National Opera, the baritone went on to win many international singing competitions including the Maria Callas Competition in Athens in 1975, the Munich Competition in 1976 and the Pavarotti Competition in Philadelphia during 1981.

Konsulov took residence in Switzerland for ten years where he sang in productions of La boheme, Tosca, Don Giovanni, Pagliacci, Forza del destino, Fidelio, Cavalleria rusticana and Otello with the Bern Opera. There were additional guest engagements at the Teatro Communale Bologna and the Teatro San Carlos - Lisbon in 1980, Philadelphia Opera in 1983, Stuttgart Opera and the Deutscher Oper Berlin in 1985. In 1984 he sang in Bratislava with Mirella Freni in Eugene Onegin with further productions in Graz, Monte Carlo, Dublin and Trieste. His major roles included Don Giovanni, Scarpia, Marcello, Tonio, Alfio, Simon Boccanegra, Eugene Onegin, Nabucco and Zurga in the Pearl Fishers.
