The soprano, Sonia Zlatkova, was born in Dobritsch on the 11 September 1965. After graduating in 1984 from the Music High School in Varna she went on to study at the Academy of Music in Sofia with Raina Mihailova from 1984 to 1989. In 1989 after winning the gold medal in the Maria Callas Competition in Athens, she went on to win the First Prize in the New Voice Competition of the Bartelsmann Company in Germany. Following that she studied with August Everding and Elizabeth Schwarzkopf.
Her debut was singing the role of Gilda in Rigoletto at the Sofia National Opera in 1989. She continued there singing the parts of Despina, Queen of the Night and Rosina. After appearing at the Bregenz Festival in 1991 and 1992 singing Frasquita in Carmen, she embarked on a career in Germany. In 1991 with the Stuttgart Opera she sang Oscar in the Masked Ball and then with the Dortmund Opera she sang the role of Violetta. From 1992 until 1995 she was a member of the Dortmund Theater singing Rosina, Pamina, Musetta, Violetta, Despina, Gilda, Lucia and Sophie in Der Rosenkavalier.
Additionally, during this period she appeared as a guest in Stuttgart and Dresden. Further engagements took the soprano to Belgium, Austria, Switzerland and her native country, Bulgaria.
