The mezzo-soprano, Virginia Popova, was born on 3 January 1923 in Veliko Turnovo. After studies with Ludmila Prokopova she made her debut with Sofia National Opera in 1941 as Olga in Eugene Onegin. Following this she traveled to Italy from 1941-42 for additional vocal studies. She finished her studies in Russia.
In 1947 she became a regular soloist with the Sofia National Opera. The mezzo was very popular as a concert soloist singing Lieder recitals in Moscow, Leningrad and Gorki.
Major roles in her career included Vanya, Carmen, Amneris, Eboli, Charlotte, Marfa, Suzuki, Olga, and Pauline in Pique Dame.
