The opera

A hussar peeks in at Parasha singing of her absent lover. He joins her in song, then leaves as her mother arrives to lament the death of their cook. A neighbor joins the mother in duet until Parasha returns with the new cook, Mavra, who joins in a quartet about the loyalty of servants. Left alone, Parasha and Mavra - the hussar in disguise - sing of their love until mamma returns to take Parasha away. 'Mavra' needs to shave off 'her' mustache, but the Mother returns and faints at the sight of the intruder - whereupon the hussar exits via the window.
