“Based on the best: Exploring African American and Latino society, culture and art through award winning children’s literature” is being held at Posvar Hall on the University of Pittsburgh’s Oakland Campus. Click here for a detailed schedule of the day’s four thematic tracks and two ethnic groups as well as information on the content of each workshop. Then preregister for the sessions you would like to attend and we will send you preparation materials designed to help you get the most from the day. The workshop takes place on Wednesday November 5, 2008 from 8:00am to 3:30pm. This workshop is designed for 3rd through 10th grade language arts, social studies and visual arts teachers and librarians. Our workshops are also open to pre-service educators.
The $40 registration fee includes continental breakfast and lunch, handouts and a copy of Red Glass and The Skin I’m In. The required readings will be mailed to you ahead of time so that all attendees can come to the day prepared. Though we typically waive registration fees for pre-service teachers who are not seeking Act 48 hours, because of the higher costs of this workshop’s supplies, pre-service teachers will be asked to pay the registration fee unless they specifically refuse to receive copies of the books. Pre-service teachers must still preregister by submitting the registration form below to ensure that enough handouts are made for everyone.
Preregister by October 31, 2008 by submitting the form below electronically and then send your $40 registration fee made payable to “University of Pittsburgh” mailed to Linda Deafenbaugh, Pennsylvania Ethnic Heritage Studies Center, 4202 Posvar Hall, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. Grant funding is available to reimburse substitute teacher costs for the first 20 registrants. Teachers who attend the full workshop day will receive 10 Act 48 credits.
