ANNOUNCING THE 2004 SYMPOSIUM AWARDS!
At this third annual event, 23 undergraduate students from the University of Pittsburgh-Oakland, University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, Carnegie Mellon University, Mercyhurst College, Juniata College, Baldwin-Wallace College, and Washington & Jefferson College presented their research papers on Europe or Russia in this competition for cash prizes. The students were placed onto one of six panels according to the topic of their paper. Two faculty members and one graduate student judged each panel; a First Prize was awarded to one student from each panel, based on both the students’ papers (submitted prior to the event) and presentations. In addition, the judges chose one overall best paper and presentation for the Grand Prize.
Prizes were awarded at the closing ceremony of the Symposium, held in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Union. The recipient of the Grand Prize received $500 and the First Prize awardees received $250 each. All participants and judges received a customized mousepad commemorating the event.
Panel 1: Economics of Transition: Cold War and After
- First Prize and Grand Prize was awarded to Ms. Margareta Chudnovsky for her paper, "Privatizing Russia: Case Study of Yukos Oil Company"
- Judges: Professors Daniel Berkowitz and Antoni Moskwa (Allegheny College), Ms. Yadviga Semikolenova
Panel 2: Borders of Truth and Identities
- First Prize was awarded to Mr. Michael J. Sechler for his paper, "‘A King Can Do No Wrong’: The English Reformation and the Rise of the Modern Nation State"
- Judges: Professors Bernard Hagerty and Irina Livezeanu, Ms. Alessandra Beasley
Panel 3: Status, Sex and Money in European Literature
- First Prize was awarded to Ms. J. Elizabeth Strohm for her paper, "Money and Moral Economy in the Early Works of James Joyce"
- Judges: Professors Marianne Novy and Lisa DiBartolomeo, Mr. Ron Von Burg
Panel 4: State & Non-State Terrorism, Spies & Organized Crime
- First Prize was awarded to Mr. Timothy Krysiek (Mercyhurst College) for his paper, "Global Operations: The Intelligence Community of the Russian Federation"
- Judges: Professors Robert Donnorummo and Robert Dodge (Washington & Jefferson College), Mr. Daniel Hammer
Panel 5: European Nation-State in the Postmodern World
- First Prize was awarded to Mr. Brian C. Andersen for his paper, "Fishing for Sovereignty: Norway’s European Voyage"
- Judges: Professors Ronald Linden and Patrick Altdorfer, Ms. Claire Piana
Panel 6: EU Enlargement in 2004: Prognosticating Change
- First Prize was awarded to Ms. Meghan McCaffrey for her paper, "The Continuing Communist Legacy in East Europe"
- Judges: Professors Ilya Prizel and Dan Thomas, Mr. Jason Koepke
