Undergraduate Research Symposium

ANNOUNCING THE 2006 SYMPOSIUM AWARDS!

This year, which marks the 5th annual Symposium, brought together 24 students from the University of Pittsburgh at Oakland, Washington and Jefferson College, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Miami University of Ohio, Muhlenberg College and Youngstown State University presented their research papers on a number of different topics pertaining to Europe or Russia.

The students were placed onto one of six panels according to the topic of their paper. Two faculty members and one graduate student judged each panel; a First Prize was awarded to one student from each panel, based on both the students’ papers (submitted prior to the event) and presentations.

Panel 1 – Use of Force in Eastern Europe
First Prize: “The Role of Armies in Yugoslav Dissolution: Militant Developments and Political Motives” by Pedja Jurisic, University of Pittsburgh

Panel 2 – Populations Ebb and Flow
First Prize: “The Effects of Immigration on Unemployment Rates in Seven European Metropolitan Regions” by Rebecca Galloway, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Panel 3 - Literary and Artistic Europe
First Prize: “Dark and Holy Thoughts: Tracking Despair in Spencer, Donne and the European Renaissance” by Elise Lonich, University of Pittsburgh

Panel 4 - Dynamics of Power in Post-Soviet Europe
First Prize: “Semi-Presidentialism in Russia and France” by Cole Harvey, University of Pittsburgh

Panel 5 - Gender Roles Past and Present
First Prize: “Deceptive Complacency: The Critical Controversy over Fanny’s Conservatism in Austen’s Mansfield Park” by Alexandra Nicholson, University of Pittsburgh

Panel 6 - From Blocks to Union: Evolution of European Politics
First Prize: “Small State Actors in EU Foreign Policy” by Tom Folsom, University of Pittsburgh
