African Studies Program Faculty Research Grants

2018-2019 Faculty Small Research Grants

 

Fall Round Due: November 2, 2018

Spring Round Due: March 15, 2019

 

The African Studies Program is awarding several competitive grants ranging from $500-$2000 to Pitt faculty affiliated with African Studies to fund travel for research related to Africa. Funding can be used for research travel to/in Africa or for other travel related to research on Africa.

 

Items that may be included in the budget include:

  • Airline tickets. Please include a quote from an agent or website.
  • Food, lodging, and related incidental expenses with actual receipts can be reimbursed up to the US Department of State per diem rate (www.pts.pitt.edu/Travel/common/perdiem.html).
  • Conference or professional meeting registration

 

Non-allowable budget items include:

  • Travel for individuals other than applicant
  • Research activity costs to occur at Pitt
  • Payment to foreign national individuals for services provided outside the United States
  • Equipment
  • Any expenses unrelated to proposed activity

 

If interested, applicants must submit:

  • a max. two-page summary of their research proposal, including:
    • The topic/problem and how it relates to Africa,
    • Significance of/need for the research,
    • Methodologies to be used, and
    • A budget justification
  • an itemized budget with quotes where applicable and with other funding sources listed
  • a current CV

 

If you are not listed as affiliated faculty and your research and teaching foci relate at least 25 percent to the Africa, please complete the online UCIS faculty survey and send your current CV to Macrina Lelei (macrina@pitt.edu). The survey must be submitted prior to submission of the application for funding. 

 

If awarded the grant, the faculty member will be required to present at either our Let’s Talk Africa or our Critical Research on Africa lecture series in 2019-2020 Academic Year.
