ASP Undergraduate Scholarship

ASP Funding for Students:

In efforts to encourage participation by students in Africa-related educational activities, ASP through its undergraduate student scholarship provides funds to support study abroad in Africa programs. Students enrolled in ASP are encouraged to apply for the scholarships that will be awarded on a competitive basis. 


Source of Funding: 

Funding for this initiative comes from a grant awarded to the African Studies program by the U.S. Department of Education under the Undergraduate International Studies and Foreign Language (UISFL) Program. The two year (2016/18) grant funding will support ASP’s efforts in planning, developing, and carrying out programs to strengthen and improve undergraduate instruction in African Studies, African languages, and faculty research and partnership engagements with African institutions and other important educational activities.


Amount of Funding:

Eligible applicants will be awarded up to the maximum of $2,000 per grant



The purpose of this scholarship is to support students in their academic activities that build knowledge and understanding of Africa and the African Diaspora through research and participation in professional conferences. Student participation in global education aligns with the university’s global vision to help students pursue research and scholarship that increase their global understanding and helping them to develop into global citizens and leaders ready to make a difference in people’s lives around the world. 


Eligibility and Requirements:

To apply for the scholarhip you must be a student at Pitt planning to study abroad in an African country either through the Panther Pitt in Africa programs or through a provider that is approved by the Study Abroad Office. You must also be enrolled in the African Studies Program, and on track to receiving the Certificate in African Studies.  The scholarship funds may be used for international travel.
