Embedding Africa in the School Day: Towards a Holistic Approach to Using African Picture Books in Your Teaching Practice

Dr. Nosakhare Griffen-El will lead this session providing teachers with an opportunity to learn how to embed African themed picture books into their daily practice. Books used in this session will cover the following subject areas: Math, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies/Civics, and the Creative Arts. The objectives of this session are to:

·       Expose teachers to African themed picture books,

·       Engage in dialogue about the importance of embedding Africa into the teaching day,

·       Collaboratively design sample lesson plans for African theme picture books,

·       Discuss an action plan on how participants will use Africa theme picture books in their teaching practice.

This session is for educators working with children ages 0-9 years old. 

 

Fundisha! Incorporating Swahili Culture into the Language Arts Classroom 

Joyce Mutsoli and Mercy Jematia will be sharing how one could incorporate cultural components into a Language Arts curriculum by using a pre-recorded video on preparing an African dish called “Pilau”. Through sharing Kenyan culture with authentic material, they will showcase the effectiveness of enlightening learners on the power of food sharing while enhancing the learners’ linguistic abilities.
