Graduate

• Applicants must be Pitt students studying Japanese at an approved program of study in the United States or Japan during the summer
• This award cannot be applied to SEALS Japan courses at the University of Pittsbugh. (Other financial aid opportunities are available for that program.
• Preference will be given to applicants who will have completed at least one year of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period

Fellows must be enrolled in an intensive program of language study.

1. The study program must provide the fellowship recipient with the equivalent of one academic year of foreign language study.
2. Study programs must be approved by the Asian Studies Center.
3. Summer FLAS Fellowships can be used for Chinese and Japanese only at third-year level or above.  Summer FLAS Fellowships can be used for Korean at the second-year level or above.
4. The language program must consist of at least 140 classroom hours for second-year courses; 120 hours for third or fourth-year courses.
5. The language program must last a minimum of 6 weeks.
6. The course must be taken for a letter grade that is based on tests administered during the course.
7. Factors that are important in the review of applicants include the overall quality of the student’s academic record, and the relevance of the FLAS Fellowship target language to the student’s plan of study. These fellowships may only be awarded to US citizens or US permanent residents.

Fellows must be enrolled in a ‘content course’ related to their language of study and a language course each term of the award period. ASC FLAS Fellowships are only given to students studying Chinese, Japanese, Korean, or Vietnamese at the second-year level or above. Factors that are important in the review of applicants include the overall quality of the student’s academic record, and the relevance of the FLAS Fellowship target language to the student’s plan of study.

• Applicants must be presenting conference papers focused on Japan
• Grants are capped at 2 per year per student
• The grants can only be applied to airfare, hotel, and conference registration.
• Preference is given to first-time applicants.

Funded through the Mitsubishi endowments

• Applicants must be graduate students in the social sciences or humanities at the University of Pittsburgh
• Applicants must have completed at least three years of Japanese language study or the equivalent by the inception of the award period
• Graduate students are eligible to receive no more than two of these fellowships
• Fellowships cannot be deferred for any reason.
• Students cannot hold a Mitsubishi Fellowship concurrent with another grant.

• Applicants must be enrolled in doctoral degree programs at the University of Pittsburgh
• Graduate students are eligible to receive no more than 2 of these grants
• A report (1-2 pages) must be submitted to the Japanese Studies Coordinator within 1 month of completion of the research
• Awards cannot be deferred for any reason.

This grant provides partial support for pre-dissertation research on topics related to China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Chinese diaspora. Priority is given to students who have not previously received this grant.

Grant is available to MA and doctoral students in Korean studies. Priority is given to first-time applicants.
