Claudio Fabian Szlafsztein

Visiting Professor, Department of Urban Studies

Born in Argentina, Claudio Fabian Szlafsztein has a degree in Geology with honors (1991, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina); a Master of Environmental Science (1995, Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science, University of Hokkaido, Japan); and a Doctor of Natural Science – Geography “Magna cum Laude” (2003, University of Kiel, Germany). Since 1995, he is Full Professor at the Center of Amazonian Advanced Studies (NAEA) of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA). He was the General Director of the UFPA - Centre of Environment (2014-2015); and Director of the UFPA’s International Relationship Office (2015-2016). He is the leader of the Research Group of the Brazilian Council for Research (CNPq) called “Group of Studies on Disasters in the Amazon Region.” He is the author of more than 50 articles published in international indexed scientific journals, 5 books, and over 22 book chapters. He is a member of the UNFCCC Roster of Experts representing Brazil. He was president of the Environmental and Engineering Geology Association of Brazil (North Region) 2016-2020. He was Senior consultant of GIZ (Germany) for Disaster and Climate Change subjects in Brazil. He was member of the Scientific Council of the Global Adaptation Institute (USA).
