    The Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking one graduate student to coordinate the content of Panoramas for the fall, spring, and summer terms 2017-18.  The goal of Panoramas is to share Latin American expertise through a new Latin American studies web presence.

    Panoramas provides a web-based venue for thoughtful dialogue of Latin American and Caribbean issues. By enabling a voice for scholars, students, policy makers and others to engage in constructive commentary on relevant current and historical topics, the forum also serves as an academic resource to worldwide educational audiences. Housed at the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, and maintained by CLAS faculty, students and alumni, Panoramas strives to be at the forefront of scholarly analysis of affairs in the Latin American region.

    Job Description
    The Panoramas student coordinators will work under the direction of the CLAS Assistant Director for Academic Affairs .  The student coordinator will be responsible for:

  • Coordinate and moderate submissions;
  • Maintaining a current and relevant program of topics on the website;
  • Coordinate maintenance of social media;
  • Assisting in the training of the interns and volunteers;
  • Contacting students, faculty, and alumni;
  • Request contributions from scholars;
  • Assist in editing our digitally captured programming.
  • Requirements
  • Full-time graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh;
  • Good background in some area of Latin American studies - discipline open;
  • Fluency in English (Spanish or Portuguese fluency a plus);
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Ability to work with computers;
  • Familiarity with social media (Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, You Tube, etc);
  • The students will be required to work 20 hours per week.

What role does embodiment play in the making of religious selves, communities, and others, for those in Africa and its diasporas? How are embodied religious practices immersed in broader concerns of inter-relational ethics and socially transformative struggles for power? Embodiment and Relationality in Religions of Africa and its Diasporas is a symposium that seeks to answer these questions and more while bringing diverse religious traditions, from Pentecostalism to Islam, to the worship of Òrìsàs, and various regions of the Pan-African world, from the African continent, to Europe, to Latin America and the Caribbean, into conversation with one another. A small group of selected scholars from across the country will meet to present papers related to the symposium theme. A different keynote lecture will also be given on each day of the symposium to highlight multiple dimensions of embodiment and relationality. These keynote lectures are free and open to the public.

 Concrete poetry, also called structural poetry, is a genre of poetry that utilizes language as a form of art, focusing on the literal definitions of words and ideograms rather than the subjective meaning they hold when strung together. Artist’s Books are primarily a late 20th-century form inspired by earlier avant-garde movements, such as Dada, Constructivism, Futurism, and Fluxus. They can come in a wide range of forms, including scrolls, fold-outs, concertinas, or loose items contained in a box

Pittsburgh Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Scholarships 

The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation is proud to offer students who are Hispanic/Latino or of Hispanic/Latino descent scholarships for the 2017-2018 scholastic year.
To be eligible to apply to the program, the student must:

  • Be attending or accepted in an accredited post-high school educational institution including 2 or 4 year college or university or vocational, technical or trade school in the United States or its territories
  • Reside in one of the following counties: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Westmoreland or Washington County
  • Demonstrate unmet financial need of at least $1,000 after the financial aid award package has been determined,
  • Have at least one parent of Hispanic ancestry (at least one of applicant’s grandparents must be Hispanic);
  • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0, and
  • Enroll as a full-time student.
  • Community involvement is preferred.
  • In addition, students must write an essay not more than 300 words discussing your ideal professional goals and how achieving those will impact the Hispanic community; or how your education has contributed to who you are today or who you will be in the future.

Convocatoria: VII Congreso Internacional de Estudiantes de Literatura
Red Literaria Peruana y el Centro de Estudiantes de Literatura de San Marcos (CELIT)

La Red Literaria Peruana y el Centro de Estudiantes de Literatura de San Marcos (Celit) convocan a la comunidad académica al VII Congreso Internacional de Estudiantes de Literatura, que este año lleva por título Panoramas críticos de los estudios literarios contemporáneos.
CONELIT es un espacio para el diálogo académico en América Latina con el objetivo de ofrecer nuevas miradas y sobre cómo abordar los estudios literarios latinoamericanos y peninsulares. Mediante este encuentro e intercambio de ideas, se busca promover la generación y consolidación de las nuevas generaciones intelectuales. En el año 2017 CONELIT celebra diez años de diversidad, camaradería y generación de conocimiento desde América Latina.
El congreso tendrá como fechas los días 10, 11 y 12 de agosto de 2017 y se realizará en el auditorio de la Casa de la Literatura Peruana (Jr. Áncash 207, Centro Histórico de Lima).

China in Latin America Working Papers Series

The Asian Studies Center (ASC) and the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) at the University of Pittsburgh jointly invite submissions for a series of working papers about the role of China in Latin America. The intent of the series is to promote research and dialogue across disciplines on the varied impacts of China’s involvement in the region. Possible themes include but are not limited to the following:
-The history of relations between China and Latin America, both modern and pre-modern
-Analyses of flows of culture and ideas between China and Latin America, including effects on consumption patterns, popular culture, and tourism
-The repercussions of China’s activities in the region upon geopolitical interests and diplomatic relationships
-The implications of Chinese investments and trade for national economies, regional economic integration, and Latin America’s capacity to compete globally
-China’s demand for primary and energy exports and the economic, political, and environmental implications of that demand
-Chinese aid packages and loans and their contrast with traditional western donor strategies of tying aid to economic reforms, human rights, democracy, and transparency
-Migration, both legal and illegal, and related questions of diasporas and trafficking
-Security issues, such as money-laundering, supply lines for the production of illegal narcotics, and illegal mining
-Other transnational questions involving China and Latin America
Papers should be appropriate for academic exchange and based on original research. We are particularly interested in papers based on empirical, textual, or archival analyses. Selected papers will be published and promoted on University of Pittsburgh websites and authors will receive feedback from a group of academics associated with ASC and CLAS. Papers may be considered for additional publications such as edited volumes as the series progresses.
Submission guidelines:
Abstract: Less than 250 words describing the topic, its significance for the field, and research methods.
Paper: Generally under 10,000 words including notes and references. Longer papers may be acceptable.

BRASA The 14th International Conference of the Brazilian Studies Association (BRASA)
 July 25 and July 28, 2018 at PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) 
Guidelines for proposals:

 1. Participants need to be BRASA members in order to submit a proposal. This is a departure from BRASA’s previous more flexible policy. Please upload the confirmation page of your membership together with your proposal.

2. BRASA accepts two types of proposals:
a) Individual papers, which in the case of acceptance, will be assigned by the program committee to a panel with similar topic.
b) Complete panels, for which all participants are already included in the initial proposal. Besides the regular presenters, a panel may also include the following roles:
i. Chair (required) – Someone who leads the panel and who is responsible for communicating with Congress organization. The chair may or may not present a paper in the panel.
ii. Moderator (optional) – Someone who will discuss the presentations by the end of the panel. The moderator should not be one of the presenters in the panel.
Each panel will last for about 2 hours, and should include at least 30 minutes for discussion immediately following the presentations. BRASA suggests panels to have four or five papers. Panels with fewer participants may have other individual papers added to it by the committee. Panels with 5 or more papers are suggested to be divided into multiple panels.

The Program Committee will not consider proposals submitted in any other format. Please check the step-by-step instructions for single paper and for panel submission.
3. Each participant may submit only one proposal and present only one paper in the Congress. However, a participant can also serve as chair or moderator in different panels.
4. The Program Committee will give preference to complete panel proposals with participants from different universities and that have an interdisciplinary focus.

Black Resistance and Negotiation in Latin America:

Runaway Slave Communities. Colloquium and Special Issue
Afro-Hispanic Review Special Issue Call for Papers:

This special interdisciplinary issue of the Afro-Hispanic Review examines maroon communities in Latin America to reassess the concept of “maroonage,” escaping slavery, negotiation with slave-based and racist systems, and resistance against oppression from colonial times to the context of our globalized world. Taking as point of departure recent literary, cultural, linguistic, historical, archeological, and anthropological studies, this issue will problematize the ideas of resistance and negotiation within Afro-diasporic studies at large, thus including material culture, social movements, and postcolonial studies. The issue celebrates UNESCO’s designation of 2015-2024 as the Decade of the Afrodescendant, bringing together representatives and works from various regions of Latin America. Editor William Luis and Guest Editors John Maddox and Graciela Maglia invite submissions of articles (20-30 pages, 2016 MLA Style [8th ed.]) by 1 August 2017. Submissions in English, Spanish, and Portuguese will be considered. Editors will also consider relevant creative writing, interviews, book reviews, and unpublished materials. III Congreso Internacional Vallejo Siempre 2018
Salamanca, 25-28 Junio 2018

El año 2014 fue una fecha clave para los estudios sobre la obra de César Vallejo, ya que, después de algunas décadas, la ciudad de Lima recibió a los más destacados especialistas en la obra del poeta de Santiago de Chuco. En dicho encuentro se acordó convocar a los investigadores vallejianos, con periodicidad bienal y en distintos lugares, para seguir estudiando y repensando su obra, que constituye un legado mundial. Así, buena parte de esos especialistas se reunió en Montevideo (Uruguay) en 2016, debatiendo sobre temas y cuestiones que enriquecieron la comprensión de la obra del vatesantiaguino. El 2018, la Fundación Instituto Castellano y Leonés de la Lengua, la Academia Peruana de la Lengua y el Instituto de Estudios Vallejianos, filial Lima, convocan a la comunidad académica al III Congreso Internacional Vallejo Siempre 2018. Para este Congreso se proponen, como temas específicos, el estudio de la vida y obra de César Vallejo en España y Francia.
