The ESC is committed to enhancing undergraduate education through the interdisciplinary study of Europe and the European Union. In addition to coursework, students are encouraged to pursue opportunities outside the classroom. Information about scholarships, fellowships, and internships during and after their undergraduate career is found below. For additional information, please arrange to meet with the Undergraduate Certificate Advisor and Assistant Director, Stephen Lund.
European Studies Center Study Abroad Scholarship
The European Studies Center has a number of scholarships available for students who plan on studying abroad in the summer and fall terms of 2018. To be eligible, students must be enrolled in the West European, Transatlantic, or European Union Studies Certificate Program. Students in the Related Concentration in European and Eurasian Studies are also eligible to apply. These awards are in the form of tuition credits, which means that only students enrolled in "Pitt in..." programs, that generate a Pitt tuition bill, are eligible to apply. The application must be accompanied by a copy of your transcript and a statement of purpose, and is due on Friday, March 2, 2018.
The Friedl E. Kessler Memorial Fellowship
To help defray the costs of studying abroad, the European Studies Center offers the Kessler Fellowship for study or research in Germany. The award is offered to a West European Studies, Transatlantic, or European Union Studies Certificate Program student in the amount of $1,000 on a competitive basis. Students in the Related Concentration in European and Eurasian Studies program are also eligible to apply. Applicants must be studying German and have at least a 3.0 QPA. The application must be accompanied by a copy of your transcript and a statement of purpose, and is due on Friday, March 2, 2018.
Harris Miller Integrated Field Trip Abroad Scholarship
An Integrated Field Trip Abroad (IFTA) is a 10 to 14 day long study abroad experience that occurs at the end of the spring term. An IFTA is linked to a specific spring term course, and provides the teacher and students the opportunity to go and study in person what they have been studying throughout the term. IFTAs are typically worth 3 credits and count towards graduation requirements.
Here are examples of IFTAs that we have sponsored in the past:
- CSD 1101 Introduction to Clinical processes in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology – followed by an IFTA to Dublin and Belfast, Ireland to examine assessment and health care delivery systems
- HA&A 0030 Modern Architecture – followed by an IFTA to Vienna, Austria and Zagreb, Croatia to study the impact of new ideas on buildings and infrastructure
Student participating in any IFTA in 2016 may apply for a Harris Miller Integrated Field Trip Abroad Scholarship. Every year five scholarships of $1,000.00 each are awarded to help offset the expenses of studying abroad. The money is applied as a credit towards the tuition bill for the IFTA. The application provides information about this year's deadline to apply.
