After five decades of conflict in the largest Afro-Arab country, on January 9, 2011 the Southern Sudanese elected to secede from the North. This lecture will discuss the developmental and political challenges of the two new nation states and the regional consequences. In addition, the issues of Arab security and the role in the Arab-Israeli conflict will be addressed.
