Her passport said she was Cha Jung Hee. She knew she was not. So began a 40-year deception for a Korean adoptee who came to the US in 1966. Told to keep her true identity a secret from her new American family, this eight-year-old girl quickly forgot she was ever anyone else. But why had her identity been switched? And who was the real Cha Jung Hee - IN THE MATTER OF CHA JUNG HEE is the search to find the answers. It follows acclaimed filmmaker Deann Borshay Liem as she returns to her native Korea to find her 'double,' the mysterious girl whose place she took in America. In the film she meets many women named Cha Jung Hee and through their stories imagines what her life would have been like had she stayed in Korea. She also delves deeper into the bureaucratic switch that changed her life and raises questions about the history and ethics of international adoptions from South Korea. This film premiered in 2010 and has received awards at four film festivals from California to North Carolina, and was shown on PBS. It is a sequel to the award-winning FIRST PERSON PLURAL, which she will show at 2 pm the same day in Marianne Novy's class Literature of Adoption, meeting in 2320 Cathedral of Learning. Deann Borshay Liem will present to both show and discuss her film.
