ASIA OVER LUNCH LECTURE – Noon in 4130 Posvar. Please feel free to join us for this lecture – all are welcome to bring their lunch or a snack along if you wish and enjoy!
What do the Chinese think of America? Why did Jiang Zemin praise the film Titanic? Why did Mao call FDR's envoy Patrick Hurley "a clown?" Why did the book China Can Say No—"no" to the United States—become a bestseller only a few years after a replica of the Statue of Liberty was erected during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests? Jing Li's lecture, based on his book of the same name, examines the making of Chinese views on the United States in the 20th century, highlighting the domestic and external forces that shaped these complex and often contradictory opinions.
