ASIA OVER LUNCH LECTURE –4pm in 4130 Posvar. Please feel free to join us for this lecture – all are welcome to bring their snack along if you wish and enjoy!

At present, India is home to about 75% of the population living with HIV/AIDS in South Asia and 15% of the global HIV/AIDS population! The epidemiological evidence shows that HIV/AIDS is a concentrated epidemic in certain subsections of the Indian population, including sex workers, men who have sex with men, and transgender people. Violence against transgender people is equally prevalent if not more widespread than among women. Though there is hardly any mention of impact of gender-based violence on high risk sexual behavior on transgender people, the issue cannot be ignored. Gender-based violence hinders the ability to negotiate the use of condoms with sexual partners, increases the chances of forceful sex and rape, and contributes to the further spread of HIV and sexually transmitted infections.
