The goal of this conference is to bring together a set of individuals whose scholarly contributions to Colonial and Postcolonial Studies, Race and Queer Studies, and Visual and Performance Studies in the last decade have changed the states of these fields. Drawing from these vastly different academic areas, Mimicry and Decolonial Performance: A Transdisciplinary Symposium bridges the gaps between them to set forth a new and transdisciplinary agenda for the study of coloniality and performance across the Americas. While previous scholarship has exhaustively studied the experiences of coloniality from the perspective of epistemology, very little attention has been given to the ways that colonial relations are embodied, visualized and performed. It is our contention that a more innovative model for thinking about Western epistemology and coloniality requires that we situate relationality at the center and critically evaluate how the relations between the West and its Others are practiced.
