Come join the African Studies program for a festival to celebrate the continent of Africa! There will be an array of activities including presentations, performances, and speakers scheduled ongoing throughout the day as well as an expo to represent each of the regions in Africa, so people can essentially “travel Africa” and sample food; buy jewelry, clothes, crafts, etc. Also, there will be opportunities to talk to people who are from, have lived in, or have visited Africa; and look into getting involved in organizations that work in and for Africa.
The culminating event of the day is an Invisible Children screening/presentation at 5-6:30 PM and with commentary from Dr. Louis Picard. Invisible Children will show Tony, a documentary about a man directly affected by the war in Northern Uganda. Also, a man from Northern Uganda will share the story of his abduction by the Lord’s Resistance Army. Invisible Children’s theme for their campaign is “Stand for Nothing: No Child Soldiers, No Killing, No War and Celebrate Everything: Every Escape, Every Name, Every Life.”
The festival is sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh’s African Studies Program, Ford Institute for Human Security, Global Studies Center, and University Center for International Studies. For more information, visit the African Studies Program’s schedule of activities or contact africast@pitt.edu or 412-624-8143.
