The European Union Center of Excellence/European Studies Center, in cooperation with the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, would like to invite you to a special brownbag lunch with visiting scholar Dr. Maxim Romanov.

This informal lunch is intended as an opportunity for Pitt faculty to meet in a small group setting with Dr. Romanov. Currently a Post-Doctoral Associate at Tufts University, he is working with the Department of Classics and the Perseus Project, Dr. Romanov’s research uses computer assisted computational methods to analyze over 29,000 biographies drawn from the massive 50-volume work on the History of Islam written by Damascene historian al-Dhahabī (d. 748/1348). Faculty or graduate students interested in learning more about Digital Humanities or whose projects involve working with large amounts of primary source materials or mining large data sets in innovative ways are welcome.

While visiting Pitt, Dr. Romanov will give a talk entitled “Connectedness in the Islamic World (661-1300 CE)” at 4:00 p.m. that same day in 4130 Posvar Hall.

People are invited to bring their own lunch. Drinks and dessert will be provided by the EUCE/ESC. Please RSVP to euce@pitt.edu.
