Professor Nancy Qian will focus on the government control and bias on the controversial topic of air pollution in China are salient: that individuals do not downplay the credibility of repeated information, even when they know the information comes from one biased government source; and, that individuals have difficulty interpreting conflicting pieces of information: and, that individuals update their interpretation of information in very different ways. Implications for air pollution policies in China are discussed.
Associate Professor Nancy Qian at Yale University is a development economist who has done highly influential work on the Chinese economy. Her work on sex ratios and missing women and the impact of family planning on fertility is part of a large agenda on economic causes and consequences of demographic patterns. She has also done fundamental work on the origins and consequences of institutions in China.
