Nearly half of all American adults--90 million people--have difficulty understanding and using health information, have a higher rate of hospitalization, use emergency services, and cost billions of dollars in avoidable health care expenditure (Institute of Medicine Report, Health Literacy: A Prescription to End Confusion). To break this cycle of limited health literacy, it is important to target the K-12 population.

This symposium is aimed at helping to establish a learning collaborative, to share, learn, and build on existing strategies that have been successfully used to integrate health literacy concepts into the K-12 school curricula, to identify current and persistent K-12 health literacy gaps, and to both discuss and strategize the next steps and action needed for greater impact in sustainable K-12 health outcomes. The symposium will include a keynote speaker, panel discussions, small group/breakout, and report back sessions.
