Silk Screen Asian Arts Org. in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh Asian Studies Center and StartUptown are pleased to present director Xu Xing's experimental documentary, A Chronicle of My Cultural Revolution.

Shot over 2 years, this documentary includes several personal stories that took place during the Cultural Revolution, starting with the director's own love story. When he was 16, he wrote a love letter to a girl in the same school, and didn't sign his name. The girl, frightened, gave the letter to her teacher who then found out about the writer. Xu was labelled a "counter-revolutionary" because of the letter and was sent to prison.

Xu Xing is a writer, documentary film maker and public intellectual currently residing in Beijing. His iconic novel Variations Without a Theme defined 1980s youth culture. Ever since, Xu's works have focused on those on society's fringes.

The CR/10 project, founded and created by University of Pittsburgh's East Asian Librarian Haihui Zhang, is an experimental project aimed at collecting the true memories and impressions of ordinary people who experienced Cultural Revolution. The aim is to record the effect of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution on different areas and different people, as well as individuals' understanding of this historical incident after it happened. This project will also try to document the unequal impact of this historical event in China.

The screening is open to the public and admission is "Pay What You Can." Light refreshments will be provided.
