ASP will host the teach Africa workshop as part of our faculty development series initiative. The goal is to provide a forum for faculty to come together to discuss opportunities and challenges of teaching about Africa. They will share their joys of teaching and best practices,while also discussing the challenges they encounter. Together, they will identify best practices and recommend ways to improve on their practice. The invited guest speaker is Dr. Lioba Moshi of the African Studies Institute, Franklin College of Arts & Sciences, University of Georgia

Dr. Lioba Moshi is a native speaker of Swahili from Tanzania. She has a Ph.D. from UCLA (1985) and is a recipient of a distinguished teaching award from the same institution. She has taught Swahili in Tanzania, England (2 years) and the United States (UCLA 4 years, Stanford 3 years). She is also the author of one of the textbooks for the department's program: Mazoezi ya Kiswahili, Kitabu cha Wanafunzi wa Mwaka wa Kwanza (Swahili exercises, a workbook for first year students), University Press of America, 1988. She also authored Tuimarishe Kiswahili Chetu, University Press of America, 1988). She has developed a series of videos intended to help students acquire Swahili language and culture.

Dr. Moshi will discuss the growth of African Studies at the University of Georgia and neighboring communities. She will share best practices that have worked well in building the program in Georgia while also sharing the challenges and approaches they have used to deal with the challenges. Two facilitators will help lead the discussions. Dr. Yolanda Covington-Ward and Dr. John Stoner will serve as workshop facilitators. All ASP affilaited faculty are encouraged to attend and all other faculty interested in African Studies are welcome to join the workshop.
