During the past century, the world has experienced nearly incessant violence and persecution in which religion is a significant factor. Tens of millions of people have been forced to migrate because they are minority populations of states that define belonging by ancestry and faith. Today, hundreds of thousands of Muslim Rohingya refugees fleeing violence in Myanmar are living in Bangladeshi refugee camps. The partitions of Greece and Turkey, India and Pakistan, Israel and Palestine, and Protestant and Catholic Ireland still reverberate through collective memory and geopolitics.

This play, written by Laurence McKeown, draws from oral achieves collected from former police officer in An Garda Siochana and the Royal Ulster Constabulary (before its reorganization to become the Police Service of Northern Ireland).

This workshop session will share the World Historical Gazetteer website, its interactive features, and resources to show how to incorporate the study of place names into course curriculum. The World Historical Gazetteer is a digital project that shows how ideas about places are embedded in their names. Ideas and actions change names and meanings associated with them. This workshop will illustrate this concept by introducing new classroom technology.
