Alejandro Trelles will share his impressions and fieldwork experience in Venezuela during a critical moment of economic crisis , violence and social unrest. Format. Brief intro and Q&A. Alejandro Trelles is a PhD candidate in political science at the University of Pittsburgh. He holds an MA in political science from the same university and a BA in political science from ITAM in Mexico City. His research interests are bureaucracy, electoral institutions, political parties and representation in Latin America and Africa.

Vietnam: New Lessons from an Old War, a Half-Century On

Unlike other American wars, the Vietnam War never really ended. It is being re-fought in scholarly works, at college reunions, in family living rooms, and among veterans. Aside from the Civil War, Vietnam was America's most divisive military conflict, and the University of Pittsburgh's Honors College program features some of the war's most outspoken scholars, participants and journalists.

The Guardian first revealed the NSA's comprehensive surveillance program in early June of last year, working from information from the now-infamous Edward Snowden. Two weeks later, a series of articles exposed NSA and British spying on European and South American officials at a G20 meeting and by the end of the month, Der Spiegel had published details of America’s electronic surveillance and bugging of European Union offices and the embassies of France, Italy, Greece, and others.

The Sociology Department will be starting off its speaker series this Friday January 10th with a book session, Social Movements in the World-System: The Politics of Crisis and Transformation with authors Drs. Jackie Smith and Dawn Wiest and panelists: Michael Goodhart, Jules Lobel, and Marcus Rediker. This event recognizes the publication of Social Movements in the World-System by faculty member Jackie Smith and her collaborator, Dawn Wiest. A panel of colleagues from Pitt’s history and political science departments and from the law school will offer commentary on the book.
