As part of the ESC's Year of Memory and Politics Series, we will hold a screening of The Silence of Others. The film reveals the epic struggle of victims of Spain’s 40-year dictatorship under General Franco, who continue to seek justice to this day. Filmed over six years, it follows victims and survivors as they organize the groundbreaking “Argentine Lawsuit” and fight a state-imposed amnesia of crimes against humanity, in a country still divided four decades into democracy.

Join us as we explore this topic with a screening of the film documentary, "Nailed It," followed by a panel discussion with members of Pittsburgh's Vietnamese community on the enduring economic entrepreneurialism of 20th & 21st century Vietnamese immigrants to the United States, and a K-14 educator workshop on how to utilize digital storymapping in the classroom.

A film screening of 1989: A Statesman Opens Up

“Coco” tells the story of Miguel Rivera, a 12-year-old Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a famous troubadour like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz — a guitar hero and movie star inspired by midcentury luminaries like Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete. Miguel’s family sharply disapproves of music, leading to a fateful act of rebellion on the Day of the Dead.
Yi Yi （一 一） is a 2000 Taiwanese film written and directed by Edward Yang. The film's theme centers around the emotional struggles of an engineer named NJ and three generations of his middle-class Taiwanese family in Taipei.
The title in Chinese means "one by one" (meaning "one after another"). When written in vertical alignment, the two strokes resemble the character for "two": (二). Yi Yi premiered at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, where Yang won the Best Director Award. It is now generally regarded as one of the major films of the 21st century.

This is the first feature film to depict the notorious Pitești Experiment in early communist Romania (1949-1951). Following the establishment of the communist regime, all university students were compelled to become Party members. Those who refused were imprisoned and 're-educated.' Based on a concept borrowed from the Soviet pedagogue A.S. Makarenko, the re-education phenomenon relied on the assumption that everyone can become a 'new person,' which in this instance was achieved by means of both physical and mental torture.

Avijit Mukul Kishore is a filmmaker and cinematographer based in Mumbai, India. His films as director include Squeeze Lime in Your Eye (2018), Nostalgia for the Future (2017), To Let the World In (2012 and 2013), Vertical City (2011), and Snapshots from a Family Album (2004).
