The Emergence of "Noise" in Industrial Japan: An/aesthetic Strategies for Factory Management
In this first lecture of the Asia Now 2022 fall lecture series, Dr. Keisuke Yamada and Dr. Andrew Niess discuss how early twentieth-century Japanese intellectuals, policymakers, and bureaucrats understood the nexus of sound, music, and labor in industrial management. Japanese authors considered how to contend with sō-on (noise) in factories, which, for managers, threatened productivity.

Metaverse in China: A Transnational Conference
The year of 2021 is called “the first year of metaverse.” With its intrinsic utopian and dystopian characteristics, the discourse of metaverse in China is entangled with the discourses of revolution, involution, scientism, monopoly, and decentralization, having wide implications for every aspect of social life. It prompts one to wonder whether “metaverse” would be another grand narrative after globalization that would fundamentally change the ways the world operates or how people perceive the world.
