In this lecture, Dr. Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London, will reveal how the island's shifting fortunes have been shaped by centuries of conquest and by a cast of dynamic characters. Using the backdrop of Cold War intrigue and the rise of its neighbor as a global power, this lecture will examine how this tiny island, caught between the agendas of two superpowers, is attempting to find its place in a rapidly changing world order.

As we come to know more about trauma, describing a single event—physical or psychological, as ‘traumatic’ often ignores its role as a historical-political-social phenomenon that pertains to much more than an individual’s experience. Perhaps it is the lack of appropriate language within the fields of trauma studies that has caused this disconnect as the stories of survivors are more often than not, tossed aside and regarded as anomalous.

Placing Okinawa: A Look at the Short Stories of Medoruma Shun

Medoruma Shun is an Okinawan activist, writer, and second-generation survivor of The Battle of Okinawa. He garnered recognition for his writings when he received the Akutagawa Prize in 1997 for his short story Droplets. Many of his short stories include what has been dubbed ‘magic realism’ in which he introduces a hint of mysticism or a touch of the supernatural into stories that take place in the real world. As an activist, Shun speaks out against the many U.S.
