A delegation of cybersecurity experts from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe visited Pitt as part of a two week U.S. tour of cities sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. In a luncheon hosted by the European Studies Center, the delegation met with faculty and graduate students working on security issues related to Europe and the transatlantic relationship.

The Guardian first revealed the NSA's comprehensive surveillance program in early June of last year, working from information from the now-infamous Edward Snowden. Two weeks later, a series of articles exposed NSA and British spying on European and South American officials at a G20 meeting and by the end of the month, Der Spiegel had published details of America’s electronic surveillance and bugging of European Union offices and the embassies of France, Italy, Greece, and others.

Vice-Provost Alberta Sbragia gave a presentation on April 16, 2013 at the Conference “Toward a Third Republic? Expectations for Post-Election Italy,” sponsored by the Bureau of Intelligence and Research US Department of State and the National Intelligence Council at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Her presentation was a part of a panel entitled “Italy, Foreign Policy, and the EU” with a focus on Italy’s relations with the European Union.

Organized in collaboration with Wulf Reiners of the Jean Monnet Chair for Political Science of the University of Cologne, the workshop will serve to bring together practitioners and academic scholars to discuss the collaboration of state and non-state actors, such as the European Union, as well as those from civil society, within the system of global health governance.

Dr. Christian Burgsmuller, a career EU diplomat with the European External Action Service (EEAS) and current Counselor at the EU Delegation to the U.S. in Washington, D.C. gave a lecture about transatlantic energy challenges facing the world today.

Special Supervisory Agent Bradley Orsini (FBI), who's also a member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Anti-Human Trafficking Coalition will be speaking about what Human trafficking looks like here in Western PA and the scope of the problem. Light refreshments will be served.
