As part of our Year of Memory and Politics and 1989 Series, the ESC, in cooperation with REEES, is pleased to welcome Maria Todorova as a Jean Monnet Center of Excellence speaker. Based on her forthcoming book on the perceived “golden age” of the socialist idea, Dr. Todorova will present the results of her research into a rich prosopographical database of circa 3500 biographies of people born in the 19th century. Based upon the diaries, letters, biographies, and autobiographies of several generations of leftists, she investigates the intersection between subjectivity and memory during the period of the Second International and reconstructs the“structures of feeling” that inspired these individuals. Lunch will be provided!
*This event counts for the UCIS1-credit pop-up course

There is a long tradition of empirical studies of Indian politics that repose, somewhat surprisingly, on remarkably little publicly available data. Since the 1960s, most political scientists have not been able to rely on strong public data and have had to build their own datasets and instruments. As a result, there is a great deal of fundamental questions on India's electoral democracy that we have no answer to, such as why people vote, what are the determinants of electoral behavior, or how has the composition of India's political class evolved through time. This presentation will give an overview of recent findings on Indian electoral politics, based on the public resources built at the Trivedi Centre for POlitical Data,a nd use them to shed light on the recently conducted general election.

In 1619, a ship carrying 20-some enslaved Africans arrived in British North America. In commemoration of the 400th anniversary of that history-shaping event, the Department of Africana Studies and the Global Studies Center will host Conversations on 1619. Too many Americans are ignorant or ill-informed about the history of slavery and enslavement, and there are too few opportunities to have frank conversations about it. Events, aimed at Pitt undergrads but open to all members of the Pitt community, provide a space for informed, moderated discussion of topics related to slavery, whiteness, racism, and the making of our country.
A Sugar Rush for your intellectual side, the ladies from Brain Candy Podcast, Susie Meister and Sarah Rice muse about their experiences with reality television, travel abroad, and everything in-between. Their guests will be Dawn Keezer, Director of the Pittsburgh Film Office, and Bill Fuller, Corporate Chef from Big Burrito Restaurant Group.
Though perhaps best known for her reality TV show stardom, Pitt alum Susie Meister is well-versed in the global and social issues surrounding displacement. She has felt this first hand while participating on the MTV television show Road Rules, where she spent months outside of her normal life and confined to adventures with strangers a Winnebago. She completed her PhD in Religious Studies at Pitt in 2014, and now works as a diversity trainer and activist against prejudice. She brings that expertise to her podcast with fellow reality star Sarah Rice from MTV’s The Real World: Brooklyn, as they explore themes ranging from global travel to social media and everything in between.
Pitt students who attend will have the chance to win a $1,000 study abroad scholarship! Pizza will be served. This event is FREE and open to the public. For more information, contact rom17@pitt.edu.
