On this day, the country transforms into a lively exhibition of remembrance filled with flowers, artistic decorations, and food. A sugar rush for your intellectual side, the ladies from the Brain Candy Podcast, Susie Meister and Sarah Rice muse about their experiences with reality television, travel abroad, and everything in between – candy for your left brain AND your right brain. Their special guest will be Dr. Larry Brilliant, notable for his work in the 1970s with the World Health Organization to eradicate smallpox.

Though perhaps best known for her reality TV show stardom, Pitt alum and Pittsburgh native Susie Meister is well-versed in global and social issues. She has felt this firsthand while participating on the MTV television show Road Rules, where she spent months outside of her normal life and confined to adventures with strangers a Winnebago. She completed her PhD in Religious Studies at Pitt in 2014, and now works as a diversity trainer and activist against prejudice. She brings that expertise to her podcast with her co-host Sarah Rice, fellow reality star from MTV’s The Real World: Brooklyn and The Challenge, who now holds an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy.

This course provides students with an opportunity to think about the most recent wave of brutal police violence in the United States in a global perspective. Expanding on our summer series, students will focus on topics such as racial capitalism, colonialism and settler colonialism, and transnational trends in militarized policing and police violence. Jasmine Cho is a Pittsburgh-based artist, author, and cookie activist most known for using portrait cookies to elevate representation for Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders. She is also a Food Network Champion (“Christmas Cookie Challenge” Season 3, Episode 8) and the Founder of Yummyholic. Her cookie activism has been featured internationally on various media outlets that include NPR, HuffPost, CBS This Morning, and The Korea Daily. In 2019, Jasmine gave a TEDx talk on her work that immediately went viral and has since reached over 47K views. Jasmine has received numerous accolades including CREATOR of the Year by the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Small Business Community Champion Award by Citizens Bank, and was also awarded a Mayor’s Proclamation declaring Jan. 28th, 2020 as “Jasmine Cho Day” by the City of Pittsburgh. This course uses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to highlight the multi-faceted field of global health. The SDGs address everything from gender equality to clean water and sanitation to affordable, clean energy. In examining how health intersects with these goals, this course draws on the expertise of Pitt and CMU as well as health and sustainability practitioners. Students who complete the course will understand how climate and sustainability contribute to good health and well-being from an truly interdisciplinary perspective.

Around 4.2 million refugees and migrants from Venezuela have left their country seeking asylum. They are fleeing from a crisis characterized by violence, human rights violations, corruption, hyperinflation, and poverty. Unlike other refugee crises, the one in Venezuela is not due to conventional war or conflict, yet the conditions people face are not too different from those in an active war zone. Despite the massive scale of displacement, the humanitarian crisis remains highly underfunded, and the international community is not giving it the attention it needs to ensure the protection and security of these refugees.

Isabel Morales is an international student from Colombia at the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently a sophomore majoring in Economics with a minor in French and a Certificate in Latin American Studies. Through her experiences living in Colombia, the United States, and Israel, along with the opportunities offered by the university, she has become greatly interested in Latin American affairs and its role in the study of development economics. As a Panoramas intern, Isabel hopes to promote the region and continue exploring areas of interest such as politics, development, and human rights.

In this workshop we will discuss how protest art uses public space to engage in dialogue between the artist and the public. At an unprecedented moment in geopolitics, the work of public artists amplifies activism, resistance, and solidarity. Artists give context and vision to broad social movements, supporting those who have been marginalized and who need justice. Artists around the world question what is and why that transcends national boundaries and politics . We will examine works of Ai Wei Wei, Keith Herring, murals from Northern Ireland, to the Black Lives movement.

In the past year more people have become familiar with the graph of the epidemic curve than ever before. Beginnings, peaks and endings of COVID-19 occupy everyday discussions, inform policies, shape social interactions and provide bases for criticism and political action. What constitutes an ending, when that endpoint is and what might bring it about is more and more unclear, however. Through historical case studies, this talk explores some of the stakes in how we think about the temporalities of epidemics, and how their historical framing may impact on public health responses.

This course provides students with an opportunity to think about the most recent wave of brutal police violence in the United States in a global perspective. Expanding on our summer series, students will focus on topics such as racial capitalism, colonialism and settler colonialism, and transnational trends in militarized policing and police violence. At the beginning of the twentieth century, demand for consumer goods such as tires for bicycles and automobiles grew rapidly. In French Indochina, this demand led to the creation of vast plantations of hevea brasiliensis, a type of tree that produces late that can be used to produce rubber. These plantations did not disappear with the end of colonialism. In fact, they served as key battlefields during the American War in Vietnam, or the Vietnam War as it is known in the United States. Dr. Aso's talk explores the role of rubber plantations during this war and uses these iconic landscapes as a case study of how the environment shaped decolonization and Vietnamese nationalism.

The Embassy of Uzbekistan is hosting a virtual presentation of the book Polymaths of Islam by James Pickett on November 11th at 3pm EST.

Polymaths of Islam analyzes the social and intellectual power of religious leaders who created a shared culture that integrated Central Asia, Iran, and India from the mid-eighteenth century through the early twentieth.

In his book, James Pickett demonstrates that Islamic scholars were simultaneously mystics and administrators, judges and occultists, physicians and poets. This integrated understanding of the world of Islamic scholarship unlocks a different way of thinking about transregional exchange networks. Pickett reveals a Persian-language cultural sphere that transcended state boundaries and integrated a spectacularly vibrant Eurasia that is invisible from published sources alone.

Is there room for STEM collaboration between US and Chinese universities in the age of military-civilian fusion and US-China economic and technology decoupling? PAUL TRIOLO will discuss the rise of China’s technological expertise, the geopolitical impact of this rise, and its influence on research at American universities. Recent discussions of “military and civilian cooperation” in China (Huawei) has questioned how American higher education can work with its Chinese counterparts in driving technological and scientific cooperation agreements with China, Paul will recommend a more nuanced approach by American universities and companies.

PAUL TRIOLO leads the Geo-technology practice at Eurasia Group. This year, he was named as a Senior Advisor on Technology for the Paulson Institute. Prior to joining the Eurasia Group, Paul served in senior postions within the US Government for more than 25 years focusing primarily on China’s rise as a science and technology and cyber power.

Sam Taylor is a British novelist and literary translator who now lives in the United States. He has translated novels by Maylis de Kerangal, Leïla Slimani and Clémentine Beauvais (among others), as well as Riad Sattouf’s graphic novel The Arab of the Future. On 13 November 2020, Sam Taylor will talk about his translation of Antoine Leiris’ You Will Not Have My Hate (2016) and the upcoming translation of Leiris’ La vie, après. He will describe the links between translation and literary creation, and talk about career possibilities in translation and publishing.

Throughout our history, art and artists have resisted oppression, violence, injustice, and inequality. Some of the world’s most interesting art is on the streets and easily accessible to all. In this workshop we will discuss how protest art uses public space to engage in dialogue between the artist and the public. At an unprecedented moment in geopolitics, the work of public artists amplifies activism, resistance, and solidarity. Artists give context and vision to broad social movements, supporting those who have been marginalized and who need justice. Artists around the world question what is and why that transcends national boundaries and politics . We will examine works of Ai Wei Wei, Keith Herring, murals from Northern Ireland, to the Black Lives movement.

The EU's relations with Iran have strengthened since the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. These relations have become more important now, as the current US administration is determined to further undermine the agreement by pressing the UN to restore economic sanctions and extend the arms embargo against Iran. The EU’s disagreement with the US position has brought the nuclear non-proliferation regime, the maintenance of international agreements, and the future of European relations with the US and Iran at a crossroads. This panel will explore these topics and provide an update on the current state of EU-Iran relations after the US elections.

Around the world, countries are undertaking fiscal stimulus responses in order to accelerate their recovery from COVID-19. On 21 July 2020, EU leaders agreed to a €1,824.3 trillion (ca $2 trillion) package which includes a €1,074.3 billion budget for the next seven years and a major stimulus package of €750 billion. The Next Generation EU (NGEU) stimulus package will help to rebuild and to support investment in green and digital transitions. Climate action is at the forefront of this historic agreement with a target of 30% of total expenditures going towards efforts to reach EU climate neutrality by 2050. A part of the package/agreement is the €150 billion Just Transition Mechanism (JTM). By targeting support to the most affected regions, the JTM program aims to guarantee that the EU’s “climate-neutral economy happens in a fair way, leaving no one behind.”

The EU also seeks to provide worldwide impact by serving as a global leader on reaching science-based targets of the Paris Agreement and by promoting implementation of ambitious environmental, energy, and climate policies with partner countries. Last year the EU announced the European Green Deal - Europe's new growth strategy for achieving climate neutrality by mid-century. Most recently the European Commission proposed to increase the 2030 target to reduce EU greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% in the next decade, compared to 1990 levels. As a part of the EU's climate neutrality agenda, innovative actions were proposed on clean hydrogen economy, methane emissions reduction, energy efficiency in the building sector, and offshore wind deployment.

What does Europe's drive for climate neutrality mean for the transatlantic cooperation? How can the EU and the next U.S. Administration work together towards a shared transatlantic agenda?

France is often portrayed as a case of color-blind civic ‘assimilation’ despite a shift to ‘integration’ since the 1980s. However, the creation of institutions such as the High Council for Integration (1989-2013) and the first ever census-based survey on the assimilation of immigrants and their France-born children (Mobilité géographique et insertion sociale, Tribalat 1993) signaled starting from the 1990s the foregrounding of cultural differentiation in public life and the promotion of ethnic origin as a framework and primary principle of classification (Bertaux 2016:1496). In this process, integration came to be perceived as a one-way ticket for ‘ethnic Others of foreign descent’ to embrace the cultural values and institutions of a purportedly homogeneous ‘non-ethnic’ core of Français de souche (‘French of French stock’). Papers in this panel argue that race/ethnic relations in France today have inherited this ideology. They show that audible characteristics of local French, a shared linguistic heritage in Marseilles, are dismissed in the speech of working-class youth (Evers), historically attested pronunciation features are recast as multiethnic innovations in working-class Parisian French (Fagyal), years of ‘banlieue literature’ addressing the themes of race and citizenship have suffered from distorted representations in the media (Horvath), and entire segments of the French population now consider themselves Citizen Outsiders for whom the cultural characteristics of the ‘uniform whiteness’ of the Français de souche remain largely alien (Beaman). The panel casts light on the utopia of a color-blind French Republic that, in its efforts at treating citizens equally before the law, makes it impossible for them to belong.

He wanted them to have an opportunity for firsthand experience and learning about Africa. Scott Morgenstern (University of Pittsburgh) will moderate a discussion between Jennifer McCoy (Georgia State University) and Stefano Palestini (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile). The discussion will be based on Thomas Legler and Jennifer McCoy's, "Games People Play: International Regime and the Venezuelan Political Crisis," presented at LASA 2016 and Stefano Palestini's, "Regional Organizations and the Politics of Sanctions Against Undemocratic Behaviour in the Americas," published in International Political Science Review, 2020.

This course provides students with an opportunity to think about the most recent wave of brutal police violence in the United States in a global perspective. Expanding on our summer series, students will focus on topics such as racial capitalism, colonialism and settler colonialism, and transnational trends in militarized policing and police violence. Students who complete the course will appreciate how policing in the USA shapes and is shaped by global processes.
