In Guatemala, the most important holiday to pay respect to the deceased is on November 1, All Saints Day, or Día de Todos Santos. On this day, the country transforms into a lively exhibition of remembrance filled with flowers, artistic decorations, and food. Locals also make and fly kites to connect with the deceased, and huge kites take over the skies of Santiago and Sumpango, (in Sacatepequez) where the largest kite festivals take place yearly. A sugar rush for your intellectual side, the ladies from the Brain Candy Podcast, Susie Meister and Sarah Rice muse about their experiences with reality television, travel abroad, and everything in between – candy for your left brain AND your right brain. Their special guest will be Dr. Larry Brilliant, notable for his work in the 1970s with the World Health Organization to eradicate smallpox.

Though perhaps best known for her reality TV show stardom, Pitt alum and Pittsburgh native Susie Meister is well-versed in global and social issues. She has felt this firsthand while participating on the MTV television show Road Rules, where she spent months outside of her normal life and confined to adventures with strangers a Winnebago. She completed her PhD in Religious Studies at Pitt in 2014, and now works as a diversity trainer and activist against prejudice. She brings that expertise to her podcast with her co-host Sarah Rice, fellow reality star from MTV’s The Real World: Brooklyn and The Challenge, who now holds an MA in Marriage and Family Therapy.

This course provides students with an opportunity to think about the most recent wave of brutal police violence in the United States in a global perspective. Expanding on our summer series, students will focus on topics such as racial capitalism, colonialism and settler colonialism, and transnational trends in militarized policing and police violence. Join the Pitt Global Hub and Asian Studies Center for an interactive cookie art workshop with Jasmine Cho as she speaks on topics of identity and activism for International Week 2020.

This event is free and open to the Pitt community – families are encouraged! The first 25 registrants will receive a FREE cookie kit complete with two blank sugar cookies as well as all the tools you’ll need to decorate along with Jasmine. All registrants will receive an ingredient list and recipe ahead of time. Jasmine Cho is a Pittsburgh-based artist, author, and cookie activist most known for using portrait cookies to elevate representation for Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders. She is also a Food Network Champion (“Christmas Cookie Challenge” Season 3, Episode 8) and the Founder of Yummyholic. Her cookie activism has been featured internationally on various media outlets that include NPR, HuffPost, CBS This Morning, and The Korea Daily. In 2019, Jasmine gave a TEDx talk on her work that immediately went viral and has since reached over 47K views. Jasmine has received numerous accolades including CREATOR of the Year by the Pittsburgh Technology Council, the Small Business Community Champion Award by Citizens Bank, and was also awarded a Mayor’s Proclamation declaring Jan. 28th, 2020 as “Jasmine Cho Day” by the City of Pittsburgh. Expanding to traditional fine art while pursuing art therapy studies, Jasmine wrote, illustrated, and published her first children’s book, Role Models Who Look Like Me: Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Who Made History. This course uses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to highlight the multi-faceted field of global health. The SDGs address everything from gender equality to clean water and sanitation to affordable, clean energy. In examining how health intersects with these goals, this course draws on the expertise of Pitt and CMU as well as health and sustainability practitioners. Students who complete the course will understand how climate and sustainability contribute to good health and well-being from an truly interdisciplinary perspective.

Around 4.2 million refugees and migrants from Venezuela have left their country seeking asylum. They are fleeing from a crisis characterized by violence, human rights violations, corruption, hyperinflation, and poverty. Unlike other refugee crises, the one in Venezuela is not due to conventional war or conflict, yet the conditions people face are not too different from those in an active war zone. Despite the massive scale of displacement, the humanitarian crisis remains highly underfunded, and the international community is not giving it the attention it needs to ensure the protection and security of these refugees.

Isabel Morales is an international student from Colombia at the University of Pittsburgh. She is currently a sophomore majoring in Economics with a minor in French and a Certificate in Latin American Studies. Through her experiences living in Colombia, the United States, and Israel, along with the opportunities offered by the university, she has become greatly interested in Latin American affairs and its role in the study of development economics. As a Panoramas intern, Isabel hopes to promote the region and continue exploring areas of interest such as politics, development, and human rights.
