2014 John G. Bowman Faculty Grants for Research Abroad

John G. BowmanThe Nationality Rooms and Intercultural Exchange Programs have announced the 2014 John G. Bowman Faculty Grants for Research Abroad.  Ten grants of $2,000 each will be awarded to support travel abroad in the interest of collecting materials and conducting research that will enhance classroom teaching.  The grants are funded by an endowment in memory of Dr. John Gabbert Bowman, Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh between 1921 and 1945.  Bowman conceived, planned and funded the construction of the Cathedral of Learning.  Chancellor Bowman also established the Nationality Rooms Program in 1926 under the
leadership of Ruth Crawford Mitchell.

Summary grant details:

  • The grants are offered to full-time University faculty members who have been teaching for at least one year at the University of Pittsburgh to enhance the quality of their teaching or to develop new courses.
  • Recipients must return to teach for at least two terms at the University of Pittsburgh upon completion of the study/research abroad. 
  • The proposed research must directly relate to a course that the individual is teaching or preparing to teach. 
  • The awards are targeted at proposals of at least three weeks duration between April and August.
