All UCIS programs have extensive and strong relationships with the regional and national business communities. The leadership of UCIS and the leaders of international business enterprises in the Pittsburgh region are in frequent contact and have pursued successful projects together. Leading companies in Western Pennsylvania such as ALCOA, PPG, Heinz, Kenametal and MSA have all partnered with UCIS to develop mutually beneficial enterprises.

Area studies faculty present seminars, updates, and day or week-long orientation programs for business people who will be working overseas or will have direct contact with foreign partners or subsidiaries. They also participate in business breakfast briefings and conferences on pursuing business in a particular country.

UCIS also works closely with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), foundations and non-profit organizations to further business links between Western Pennsylvania and international ventures. UCIS  has close ties with the regional District Export Council, the American Council on Germany, the United Nations Association of Pittsburgh, the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh, and Global Solutions Pittsburgh.
