Appalachia and Asia:

Incorporating Asian Studies in the West Virginia Classroom

Enroll now for this this content rich seminar for teachers of grades K-12. Designed as an introduction to the cultures of CHINA, JAPAN and KOREA, the course will encourage and facilitate K-12 teaching and learning about East Asia in World History, Geography, Social Studies, Art, and World Literature. Media specialists, librarians, art teachers, and world language teachers are also encouraged to apply. Class time will be devoted to group discussions of teaching materials and strategies appropriate for different teaching levels.

This seminar will provide you with both the content and resources needed to implement the study of East Asia into your curriculum in accordance with the state’s academic standards, including geography and world history standards. No previous background in Asia is assumed. Teams of teachers as well as teachers in schools with NCTA alumni are strongly encouraged to apply.

Credits and Financial Benefits

Each participant who completes the course and course requirements will receive the following:

  • A light dinner at each seminar meeting.
  • $200 worth of teaching materials for your school, including course textbook and a one year subscription to the journal Education about Asia
  • $200 stipend at the completion of all coursework
  • Eligibility to participate in a variety of in-county experiences in East Asia during the summer. 
  • The option to take this seminar for graduate credit from Marshall University is available

Dates for the 2019 NCTA Seminar:

  • September: 9, 16, 24, 30
  • October: 7, 14, 21, 29
  • November: 4, 19

All seminars will be on Monday except for those held on September 30th, October 29th, and November 19th. These three sessions will be held on a Tuesday.
