East Asia: A Seminar for Teachers

East Asia: A Seminar for Teachers

Do your students know how to think cross culturally?

This FREE content-rich seminar is for public and private school teachers of grades K-12, as well as school librarians who are able to include East Asia in their teaching. The 36-hour seminar will explore the history, philosophy, politics, art, literature, languages and cultures of China, Japan and Korea. It will include engaging lectures by Lehigh University faculty, as well as time for group discussion of teaching materials and strategies for classroom teaching.

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of China, Japan and Korea in the context of the global community. In Japan, students remain in the same classroom all day, working in groups, while the teachers move around from class to class. Japanese schooling is characterized by strong institutional ties between schools and employers;

  • Gain an appreciation for East Asian cultures and traditions, including language, literature and contemporary issues; and

  • Become familiar with content and resources necessary to implement the study of East Asia into the curriculum, in accordance with the Pennsylvania academic standards, as well as the geography and history standards.

Seminar requirements:

  • Attend and participate in all sessions (30 hours in the fall and 6 hours in the spring)

  • Design and implement lesson plans that incorporate East Asian themes.
