Known as a specialist in the bass roles of Mozart, Pavel Gerdjikov was born on 21 May 1938 in Kardjali.
His debut with the Sofia National Opera in 1962 was in the opera Yavas Nine Brothers by Pipkov. Additional engagements included Salzburg, Berlin, Glyndebourne, Athens, San Carlo, and in Russia at the Kirov and Bolshoi. While most of his major roles were those of Mozart (Don Giovanni, Figaro, Don Alphonso, Don Basilio), Russian and Italian roles were also in his repertoire.
After a successful singing career he turned his abilities to helping young singers at the State Conservatory of Music. In 1971, while singing in Pique Dame at the Glyndebourne Festival with John Pritchard conducting, he sang both the tenor and bass roles because of an indisposed singer - and received two salaries for the performance.
We are pleased to present him here in Boyanskiya Maistor and Ivailo
