The soprano, Maria Bohachek, was born 21 October 1931 in Orichovo. In 1953 she graduated from the State Academy of Music as a student of Ludmila Prokopova. When recommended for studies in Italy by Boris Christoff, she went to Rome in 1960 to study with Maestro Ricci. Her debut was singing Nedda in Pagliacci at the Varna Opera. Since 1961 she was a regular member of that opera company. International appearances took the soprano to most of the Eastern Bloc countries of the Soviet Union, Roumania and Czechoslovakia. Major roles included: Gioconda, Santuzza, Leonora in Trovatore, Minnie, Aida, Amelia, Manon Lescaut, Tosca, Mimi and Nedda.
