The tenor, Georgi Cholakov, was born in Varna in 1935. After studies at the engineering institute of Sofia between 1954 - 1959 he began vocal studies at the State Music Academy in 1960 with Liliana Jablenska.
Between 1965 and 1968 he sang with the Stadtsoper in Goerlitz, Germany. From 1968 until 1973 he was a soloist with the Sofia National Opera. He continued his vocal studies in 1970 in Milan with Magda Pikarolo and appeared as a guest in Cuba and Japan. In 1973 additional engagements took him to Moscow, Kiev, and Tashkent. From 1974 until 1977 he was a member of the Stadtsoper in Mannheim then of the Stadtsoper in Duesseldorf from 1977 to 1996. In 1967 Georgi Cholakov was a prizewinner at the Singer Competitions in Vervie, France and Toulouse, France. In 1972 he won first prize in the Singers Competition in Merano, Italy. International appearances took him to Cuba, Japan, USSR and other European countries.
Major roles in his career included Rigoletto, Alfredo, Rudolfo, Edgardo and concert performances in works of Mozart and Verdi.
