The bass, Pavel Elmazov, was born in Sofia on 18 March 1898. He graduated from the Music School in Sofia as a double bassist. In 1919 he was a soloist in the Theater Renasence and as a member of the chorus of the Sofia National Opera. Between 1919-24 he studied at the Musikverein in Vienna as a student of Anderson, Manberg and Weill. During this time he performed comprimario roles in various theaters in Vienna. In 1924 he returned to Sofia where he had his debut as Mefistofele in Faust.
In addition to the roles with the Sofia National Opera as Dr. Bartolo, Varlaam, Ramfis and Don Giovanni he performed in many of the operas of Richard Wagner. He was also known as a popular basso-buffo.
