The soprano, Penka Koeva, was born in Plovdiv on 16 March 1932. She graduated from the State Academy of Music as a student of Georgi Zlatev-Cherkin.
She appeared with the Plovdiv Opera in 1953 with her debut being there on May 15, 1954 singing Tatyana in Eugene Onegin. In 1959 she won the first prize and Gold medal in the 7th World Youth Festival in Vienna. During 1958 she was the second prize winner at the International Music Competition in Geneva and in 1959 won the Dimitrov prize in Bulgaria.
In addition to concert appearances Koeva regularly performed in the various opera theaters of Bulgaria singing the roles of Tosca, Tatyana and Leonora in Trovatore. Additional roles where in the operas of D'Albert, Dvorak and Dargomyzhsky.
