The tenor, Bojidar Nikolov, was born on 19 March 1959 in Sofia. After receiving his diploma at the State Academy of Music in Sofia in 1985 as a student of Rene Penkova, he had additional studies with Nikola Nikolov. In 1987 after becomming a member of the Opera Studio of the Vienna State Opera, he sang regularly with the Vienna State Opera as Casio in Otello, Alfredo in Traviata, Arturo in Lucia and Narraboth in Salome.
In 1990, after winning second prize in the Vocal Competition in Miami, Florida, many international guest appearances followed. First singing in the Janacek opera, House of the Dead, at the Salzburg Festival during the 1992 season, then in Stuttgart in 1992 as Don Jose. Between 1992 and 1996 he sang at the Basil Opera, Switzerland, the roles of Rigoletto, Cavaradossi and in the opera La Vestale, in addition to the Verdi Requiem. In 1997 he appeared as Don Alvaro in Forza del Destino in Dortmund and in Naples in 1998 as Tannhäuser. During a tour to Japan in 1989 he sang in the opera Viaggio du Rheims conducted by Claudio Abbado.
His North American debut in 1997 was in the role of Don Jose at the Hamilton Opera in Ontario, Canada where he was invited back in 1998 to sing Cavaradossi. The sound in the following recordings is below par as they were taken from in house taping.
