The bass, Liubomir Vishegonov, was born in Sofia on 22 July 1913. He graduated in 1937 from the State Academy of Music as a student of Mara Marinova-Tzibulka and Christina Morfova. In 1931 he became a chorus member and trainee artist of the Sofia Opera.
His debut was with the Sofia Opera on 5 June 1933 in a production of Khovantchina. Starting in 1935 he become a member of that company and was a leading bass there singing Gremin, Philip and in the operas Lakme, Sadko and Tzar Kaloyan.
In 1937 he became a principal bass of the Prague Opera where he remained until 1941. Additional international appearances took him to Zurich, Vienna and Paris.
He came to the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1949; his roles there included Padre Guardiano, Sarastro, Boris, Sparafucile, and Philip.
