The soprano, Galina Yoncheva, was born 21 April 1936 in Gurkovo. She graduated from the Music Conservatory of Athens in 1966 and continued studies in Sofia in 1967 with Christo Brambarov. Traveling to Vienna she studied with M. Brand during the years 1975-76.
While in Sofia she was a soloist with the National Academy Theater for Opera and Ballet in 1969. During the 1976-77 season she guest appeared at the Glyndebourne Festival in England.
Major roles in her career included Mimi, Butterfly, Tatyana, Lisa, Jenufa and Lelia. In addition to her operatic career she enjoyed great success as a concert singer.
