Sarah Geisler

While participating in the GSC’s Certificate Program, I studied and worked abroad including experiences in Cyprus, Rwanda, and Turkey.  I was also a Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellow in 2011, and graduated with the Certificate in 2012.  Together, these experiences cultivated in me a strong interest in foreign affairs including human security related issues.

In Fall 2012, I entered graduate school at the University of Southern California (USC), where my foreign affairs/human security interests culminated in my discovery of public diplomacy.  At USC, I studied media coverage and nation-branding efforts in post-conflict states, specifically in Africa.  I graduated from USC in May 2014 with a Masters of Public Diplomacy from the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism.

Sarah Receiving Monterrey Assignment

I was successful in my bid to become a Foreign Service Officer in the US Department of State, having joined the Foreign Service in August 2014.  My first Foreign Service assignment will be as a Consular Officer in Monterrey, Mexico beginning August 2015.  In preparation for that assignment, I am currently studying Spanish while residing in Washington, DC.

My study abroad and work experiences while a student at Pitt, including my Pickering Fellowship and work to satisfy the GSC Certificate requirements, prepared me well for both graduate studies at USC and a government career in the US Foreign Service.
